Renting a car without a deposit in Chisinau: what it really means and how to rent it profitably

Renting a car without a deposit in Chisinau: what it really means and how to rent it profitably

When someone sees the phrase “car rental without a deposit,” they picture one thing: take the car, freeze nothing on your card, and drive. That’s exactly how most international aggregators advertise it. The reality is usually a bit more nuanced — and in this article we’ll explain how low-deposit car rental works in Chișinău, why a small guarantee of 50–100 € is fair and beneficial for both sides, and how to rent a car quickly without any unpleasant surprises.

Why a deposit exists — and why that’s perfectly normal

A deposit on a rental car is not a way to make money off the customer. It’s standard practice worldwide: the guarantee protects the company in case of minor damage, fines, or a fuel shortfall at return.

Large international chains like Hertz or Europcar block between 200 and 1,000 € on your card. For a tourist renting a car for 3 days, that kind of hold is a real strain on the budget.

At rent-auto.md we take a different approach: the deposit is 50–100 € depending on the vehicle class. It’s an amount that won’t derail your budget, while still allowing us to operate responsibly.

The difference between “no deposit at all” and “minimum deposit”

Several real schemes exist in the Chișinău rental market:

Scheme 1 — No deposit whatsoever. Sounds appealing, but it usually means either a very expensive insurance policy built into the rate, or a higher daily rate that effectively compensates for the absence of a guarantee. The total rental cost is often higher in the end.

Scheme 2 — Minimum deposit of 50–100 €. This is exactly what we offer. The daily price stays transparent and competitive, and the deposit is returned in full when the car comes back in the same condition. For most customers, this is the most cost-effective format.

Scheme 3 — Deposit via card pre-authorisation. The money is not charged — it’s only blocked and released automatically. This option works well for anyone with a credit card that has sufficient available credit.

What you need to rent: documents and conditions

The booking process is straightforward. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Passport or national ID card
  • Driving licence (Moldovan or international)
  • Cash or card for the deposit

Minimum driver age: 21 years. Driving experience: at least 1 year.

For EU tourists: driving licences from all European Union countries are accepted with no additional documents required. An international driving permit is not mandatory but is welcome.

The rental agreement is drawn up in three languages — Romanian, Russian and English. You receive your own signed and stamped copy.

Insurance: what is and isn’t covered

This is the most important section — please read carefully.

The basic insurance included in the rate covers:

  • third-party liability (mandatory motor insurance)
  • vehicle theft

The basic insurance does not cover:

  • bodywork damage caused by the renter
  • broken windows and headlights
  • tyre and wheel damage

For these risks we offer an additional Full Coverage policy — +7 € per day. With it, the deposit drops to a nominal 50 € for any vehicle class, and your liability in the event of an accident is limited to the excess.

Tip: if you’re renting for a week or longer, Full Coverage is absolutely worth it. For 1–2 days — run the numbers based on your itinerary.

Vehicle inspection: the step most people skip

Before taking the keys, spend 5 minutes on a joint inspection with our manager. All pre-existing damage is recorded in the handover document — scratches, dents, interior condition. Take your own photos on your phone.

This protects you: at return, no one can attribute damage to you that was already there when you picked the car up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a car and drive to Romania or Ukraine?
Cross-border travel is possible — please confirm at the time of booking. Trips into the EU require an additional permit and the appropriate insurance; pricing is agreed separately.

Is the deposit returned on the day I hand the car back?
Yes. When the vehicle is returned at the agreed time and in proper condition, the deposit is refunded immediately — in cash, or the card hold is released within 1–3 business days (depending on your bank).

What if I return the car late?
An hourly surcharge applies for each hour beyond the agreed return time. If you realise you’re running late — just call ahead and we’ll always find a solution.

Do you offer vehicle delivery?
Yes, we deliver to Chișinău International Airport and to the city centre. Please confirm delivery conditions at the time of booking.
