Verified routes, parking details, and essential tips for drivers: exploring wine Moldova on your own terms.
Moldova is a country where the road map almost perfectly matches the “Wine Map”. Renting a car in Chisinau gives you the main advantage over group tourists — freedom. You are not dependent on bus schedules, you can stay to watch the sunset in the vineyards, and you can buy as many cases of wine as your trunk can hold.
We have selected the top 5 locations within a one-hour drive radius of Chisinau that feature excellent access roads and secure parking.
Guide Contents:
1. Cricova: The Underground Legend
Distance from center: 15 km Travel time: 25 min
This is Moldova’s calling card. Former limestone mines have been transformed into a giant underground city with streets named after wine varieties. It houses Hermann Göring’s wine collection and unique vintages from around the world.
The Road and Parking
The drive from downtown Chisinau (Riscani sector) takes no more than 20 minutes. The road is excellent and recently renovated.
- Parking: The complex has a large free parking lot for visitors. In high season (autumn), it can be crowded with tour buses, so park your rental car closer to the exit.
- Tour Specifics: Unlike Milestii Mici, you are not allowed to drive your own car into the cellars here. You leave your car in the parking lot and transfer to the winery’s special electric train.
Why go?
For sparkling wines produced using the classic French method (Méthode Champenoise) and the underground cinema.
2. Milestii Mici: Driving Through Wine Tunnels
Distance from center: 20 km Travel time: 30 min
Milestii Mici is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest wine collection in the world (200 km of tunnels, of which 55 km are used). This is a unique place for car enthusiasts.
The “Drive-in” Experience
This is the only winery where the tour is conducted in your own (or rented) car. You drive into the underground tunnels following the guide’s car.
- The Road: Exit via the Botanica or Telecentru district. The road is paved, but can be narrow when approaching the village.
- Requirement: You must have a free seat in your car for the guide (unless you book a guide with a separate car, which costs more).
3. Castel Mimi: Architectural Masterpiece
Distance from center: 38 km Travel time: 45-50 min
The first and only true chateau in Moldova. Built in the late 19th century by Governor Constantin Mimi, it recently underwent a grand restoration. This is a “luxury” location: musical fountains, light shows, fine dining.
The Route
The winery is located in Bulboaca village, Anenii Noi district. You drive along the R2 highway.
- Road Quality: Ideal. In 2023, for the European Political Community Summit, the road to the castle was completely rehabilitated. Driving is a pleasure.
- Parking: Huge guarded area in front of the castle. It is safe to leave any class of car here.
What to try: Rosé from the Bulgeri variety (local indigenous grape) and fine dining at the “White Owl” restaurant on the territory.
4. Asconi Winery: Southern Comfort and Tradition
Distance from center: 30 km Travel time: 40 min
If Mimi is glamour, then Asconi is the soul of the Moldovan village. Thatched roofs, traditional ovens, huge portions of placinta (pies). The winery is located in Puhoi village.
Trip Specifics
You need to drive out of Chisinau towards the airport and turn south (towards Singera/Anenii Noi). Watch the navigation; the turn to Puhoi is easy to miss.
- The Road: Good, but the last 5 km pass through the village, where you need to be careful of pedestrians and horse-drawn carts.
- Atmosphere: This place offers the best conditions for families. While the driver drinks coffee or homemade lemonade, passengers can enjoy the Ice Wine for which Asconi is famous.
5. Chateau Vartely: Modernity on the Hills of Orhei
Distance from center: 48 km Travel time: 50-60 min

- Route Bonus: You will drive through beautiful forests (Codru) along the way.
